An Easter Promise
By webmaster @ 10:59 AM :: 327 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz

Easter is past. It was two days ago. We can look at it as an event, and now life can return to normal. That would be tragic.  Easter is not an event we get over, like Thanksgiving or Valentine's Day. Easter is the alive, spiritual presence that empowers our lives, enables us to see a new spiritual dimension,  changes our values systems, and, as the Bible says, "opens our eyes."

Yes, the ordinary still happens, the tragic still happens, the boring still happens.

Power of the Resurrection
By webmaster @ 7:00 AM :: 356 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz

Sunday was Palm Sunday. A day of adulation and praise. A day of "Hosanna in the Highest" A wonderful "feel good" day. We like Palm Sundays...they lift us and make us feel good. Jesus, however, was not to be seduced by Palm Sunday. He came in humility knowing what he faced. In the next six days he was to face integrity (cleansing of the Temple), real values (the Temple is not where it is at, it will be destroyed), betrayal (money can distort our loyalties), denial (it is hard to put yourself at risk in front of a crowd), anger screaming all around you, false accusations, and finally feeling alone on the cross (My God, My God...). In it all he maintained his integrity, was true to his deepest divine self, was true to God, and experienced the power of the resurrection.

Remember
By webmaster @ 10:16 AM :: 311 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz

We just came from St. Barnabas Hospital. We got a call earlier today that our good friend Ethel was in a coma and was slipping. She might die before I finish writing this, or tonight, or tomorrow... it will be soon.

My wife Judy and I spent some time with her husband Julie and their grown daughter and son. As we talked, Ethel lay in bed laboring for each breath. Many memories. She came to work with me at the Counseling Center in 1975. A great support. When there was a problem, she had the positive solution. When a meeting got tense, she was the easing humor. We watched their kids grow , marry and become parents. We watched her husband's medical practice grow.  Many memories.

Morning Has Broken
By webmaster @ 9:38 AM :: 355 Views :: 1 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz

It was about 6:00 a.m. A hint of  early morning red in the distance promising a rising sun. Huge mountains on both sides of the boat. Snow caps off to the left. It was chilly, kind of misty, and unbelievably beautiful. Our cruise ship was turning into Doubtful Bay in Milford Sound, the fjords of south eastern New Zealand. It was untouched, unspoiled, primeval. No human being had ever walked over those mountains. The dark green was too thick to get through. It was rocks, waterfalls, glaciers, pure creation and quiet.

A song started going through my head... "Morning has broken, like the first morning..." The beauty was unreal and sacred. For an hour or more we sailed up the fjord in water that was nearly a mile deep, watching trees, birds, waterfalls, rocks, and a rising sun giving it all breathtaking definition and color.

Temptation
By webmaster @ 7:00 AM :: 315 Views :: 1 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz
I have thought a lot about Jesus temptation story, and have wondered what this could mean to me. Changing stones into bread or jumping from a high pinnacle or ruling the nations of the world do not register with me. None of these have been my wildest fantasy. I do get the point of not giving in to the tempter, but there has to be better application than that.

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me
By webmaster @ 4:30 PM :: 313 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz
This week is the beginning of Lent, moving toward Christ's ultimate expression of love. The cross, previously a symbol of shame, was transformed into love. We Christians often talk about cross bearing. And I think we often get it all wrong.  We see cross bearing as something distasteful that has fallen into our lives and we have to deal with it... an illness, bad relationship, struggles in a job.

Love is Patient
By webmaster @ 9:36 AM :: 355 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz

A while back I told my granddaughter I was going to do a sermon. She asked what I was talking about. I told her "Patience." She was shocked, "Patience! You talking about patience! You are probably the most impatient person I know."

I have thought a lot about this and in many ways she is right. The Apostle Paul reminds us "Love is patient"... and my impatience gets in the the way... in the way of receiving His love and in the way of being the loving person He would have me be.

Stand Up and Walk
By webmaster @ 9:22 AM :: 330 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz
There is an amazing story in the Gospel of John about the man beside the pool who had been ill for 38 years. The story goes that when the spirits moved the waters of the pool, the first person in was healed. Can you imagine, waiting 38 years, needing to be alert every waking hour to see if the water was going to stir, and then when you could get to the water, it was too late. Again and again.

Prayer
By webmaster @ 9:47 AM :: 358 Views :: 2 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz
Two people were having a conversation about prayer. It seems that in the Bible, especially the Old Testament, God talked to people. The Lord "talked" to Moses, the prophets, David, and others.

The question was then asked, "Why does God not talk to people today like He did then?" In reply the other person quoted the psychologist, Carl Jung: "It always makes me think of the rabbi who was asked how it could be that God often showed himself to people in the olden days while nowadays nobody ever sees him.  The rabbi replied: "Nowadays there is no longer anybody who can bow low enough."

Have a Happy New Year
By webmaster @ 7:00 AM :: 319 Views :: 0 Comments :: Dr. Bill Lutz

We wish each other a Happy New Year and I believe God wishes us a Happy New Year. We all know people who are not experiencing a good new year and there are times when we all have those negative feelings.

Years ago Dr. Peale told the story about a group of people who got together one evening and wrote out their expectations for the coming year. These were put in a sealed envelope and opened the following year. One lady had written that she expected an awful year and when it was opened she shared how awful the year had been. Another had written 10 things she wished to accomplish and shared with the group that she had done 8 of them and felt very good about it. Another had died during the year and when his envelope was opened he had written that since no male member of his family lived to be 60: he was 59 and he expected to die during the year.
