No One to Blame
By webmaster @ 8:14 AM :: 276 Views :: 1 Comments :: Sister Carol Perry

It is mid-February and the temperature this morning in Kingston is in single digits. The ground still has a snow cover from the weekend's weather. However, to my astonishment as I look out my window, three robins and a blue jay are perched in the nearest tree. Did they get a tip from the wrong weatherman?

I have often thought I would like to be a weather forecaster. So many people would listen to my predictions, but stir in a shift in the winds and the following day would be totally unrelated to what I had opined. No matter. No weatherman ever had to look back. No abject apologies are demanded for the dire that turns out to be fair, for the blizzard that goes elsewhere, or for the rain that ends our picnic in the park.

All that matters is what the weather is actually doing, not what someone said it would be doing. There is a splendid present tense only about the weather, no blame or reward attached. Nothing else in life is like that, is it?

I worked for years with a high school principal who tried to instill in adolescents the maxim: actions have consequences. He was right, they do—in every realm but that of the weather prognosticator. All the complex wind charts in the world and the computer generated data are trumped by what is actually happening between sky and earth.

I love it. In a world of lawsuits over everything from the temperature of the deli coffee to a fifth-grader's report card, the weatherman (or woman) walks away with a smile.

And what might we conclude? Since so few pronouncements in life remain blameless, I hesitate to recommend punishment for errant forecasters. As a stranger in an office building said to me yesterday, "Oh, the weatherman is always wrong." Perhaps it isn't that bad on the scoreboard, but if you really are concerned about the weather,  look out the window. That's your truest guide.

And maybe those unreasonable birds just got tired of life in the South and wanted to remind me what Shelley wrote 150 years ago: "In winter comes, can spring be far behind."

Thank you for today's blog. It made me think abouit acceptance. I wonder how far I could "stretch" acceptance. To the weather - just about always. To my self, my current situations, personality patterns? Sometimes. To others in my life? Lots of work for me to do there, on acceptance!! I just saw a beautiful film for the first time - A River Runs Through It. For me that film is about acceptance, as a family had to accept the wildness and gambling addiction of one son, which ultimately killed him. Along with accepting this sad truth came accepting all that was great about him and being with him. Now that film is in my top ten! Have a wonderful day. It's sunny out. :)
