Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! Psalm 27:14
This is perhaps a most difficult task for most of us. I can only speak for myself and I know that I am often impatient. I desire instant gratification. I need to see progress being made.
Waiting... it’s a hard thing to do. Why should we wait? Are there lessons to be learned while we wait?
Waiting for the Lord helps me grow in a more humble attitude with God. While I wait, I realize that God’s time is eternal. I learn that I cannot push or pressure God—all of my whining entreaties of “I need this or that” go away. I learn that trying to barter with God will not get me closer to my desires—“O God, if you will do this for me, I promise to...”
I learn to trust God more and more as I wait in silence. I learn who God is and who I am. One of the fruits of waiting a long, long time is the realization of how deeply God loves each one of us.
The psalmist was very wise – knowing that waiting takes a great deal of strength and courage. All too often, waiting becomes too much—we give up—we walk away from God.
Are you in the process of learning humility, like me? Let us encourage each other to be strong, to not grow weary or loose heart. Each of us is ‘under construction’. God is making us into new creations each day! |
